Lake Tahoe is a lake, so ocean tide predictions don't apply. Plan around daylight, wind and the solunar windows instead.

About this spot
Spot type
A large, deep freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada. It covers 192 square miles and has a maximum depth of 1,646 feet (NDOW Lake Tahoe angler guide 2026). The lake borders California and Nevada, with about one-third of it in Nevada (NDOW — Zephyr Cove). The USGS gauge at Tahoe City lists the lake's natural rim at 6,223 ft and its maximum legal limit at 6,229.1 ft, both on the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation datum (USGS 10337000).
Public access
- Boat ramps (California). The Lake Forest Boat Ramp, run by the Tahoe City Public Utility District, is 1.5 miles east of Tahoe City off Highway 28. TCPUD says it is open year-round with seasonal changes in hours. As of 2026-10-16, TCPUD's page announces a closure from November 1 through November 30 for scheduled dredging. Check the TCPUD ramp page for current status.
- Boat ramps (Nevada). Nevada State Parks has public boat launches at Cave Rock and Sand Harbor (NDOW — Zephyr Cove; NV State Parks — Sand Harbor). As of 2026-10-16, Nevada State Parks lists the Sand Harbor boat ramp as closed for the season. Check the Sand Harbor page for current ramp status.
- Shore fishing. NDOW says shore access is limited around most of the lake because of private property and limited parking. It names Cave Rock and Sand Harbor as producing the best catches of small rainbow trout, because fish are stocked there (NDOW guide). The Forest Service suggests places where the shoreline drops off quickly, such as Rubicon Point on the west shore and Cave Rock on the east shore (USFS LTBMU — Fishing at Lake Tahoe).
Commonly caught species
NDOW says lake trout (mackinaw) are the most caught and most popular species, and rainbow trout are the next most sought-after. Rainbow trout make up most of the fish caught from shore. Kokanee and wild brown trout are also caught, along with largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie and bullhead catfish. Stocked Lahontan cutthroat trout are caught as well (NDOW guide). The Forest Service lists the same main trout and salmon species and says kokanee are highly unlikely to be caught from shore (USFS LTBMU). In 2022 CDFW described the Lahontan cutthroat as the only trout native to the Tahoe Basin and noted that it is listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act (CDFW news, 2022).
Local rules and authority
- Licences across the state line. Anglers 16 and older need a licence, and a California or a Nevada licence is valid anywhere on Lake Tahoe (CDFW news, 2022; NDOW guide). Nevada's regulation accepts a California sport fishing licence with the appropriate stamps, a Nevada fishing licence, or a Nevada Interstate Boundary Waters licence (NAC 502.286). This covers Lake Tahoe itself. The Forest Service notes that surrounding lakes and streams require a licence from the state you are fishing in (USFS LTBMU).
- Regulations. Rules differ between the California and Nevada portions of the lake. NDOW lists closed areas in the Nevada portion near some creek mouths and boat ramps (NDOW guide). Check current regulations with CDFW and NDOW before fishing.
- Invasive species. All motorized watercraft must pass a mandatory inspection before launching into Lake Tahoe (Tahoe Boat Inspections; TCPUD; NDOW guide). TCPUD says non-motorized craft such as kayaks and paddleboards do not need an inspection, but all watercraft and gear must be clean, drained and dry before and after launching (TCPUD). Check Tahoe Boat Inspections for inspection locations and current requirements.
Tide station
Not applicable — freshwater lake; no ocean tides. The lake level shown on this site comes from the USGS gauge "Lake Tahoe at Tahoe City" (10337000) (USGS).
Other spots nearby
- Spooner Lake (NV). A small reservoir inside Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, at 6,980 ft, that drains into Lake Tahoe through North Canyon Creek. NDOW lists rainbow trout and bowcutt trout (a rainbow–cutthroat hybrid) (NDOW — Spooner Lake).
- Truckee River. Starts at the outlet of Lake Tahoe and holds rainbow and brown trout (NDOW — Truckee River).
- Fallen Leaf Lake (CA). A short walk from Fallen Leaf Lake Road or Fallen Leaf Campground. The Forest Service says the best fishing is from a boat and that fishing within 250 feet of the dam is illegal (USFS LTBMU).
- Echo Lakes (CA). A short drive off US-50, with boat and shore fishing (USFS LTBMU).
Note updates
- 2026-10-16: Checked against the sources listed below and approved, replacing the earlier draft shown on this page. Statements we couldn't confirm from those sources were taken out, and status lines now carry the date we checked them. Changes from the draft:
- Species: NDOW calls rainbow trout the next most sought-after fish after lake trout; we had said they were the next most caught.
- Removed an estimated lake-surface elevation.
- Fixed the link to the Nevada Department of Wildlife regulations.
- Removed estimated distances to nearby lakes.
