About this spot

Spot type

Pier. Pier 7 is on The Embarcadero, on the Port of San Francisco's waterfront. A Port Waterfront Plan chapter describes it as a public access and fishing pier that extends 900 feet into the Bay ([1]). The Port's 2022 Waterfront Plan lists Pier 7 among the public pedestrian and fishing piers the Port hosts ([2]). CDFW includes "Pier 7" in its San Francisco County list of public piers ([3]).

Public access

  • The Port's fishing page says fishing is allowed from public piers and spaces ([4]).
  • Transit: the Muni F Market & Wharves line has a stop at The Embarcadero & Broadway ([5]). A pier-fishing guide (secondary) places the pier just down The Embarcadero from Broadway ([6]).
  • For hours and access, check with the Port of San Francisco ([4]).
  • Status: CDFW notes that landowners may close piers at any time for safety, maintenance or other reasons ([3]). Check the Port of San Francisco for current status. As of 2026-10-16, CDFW lists Pier 7 without a closure note ([3]).

Commonly caught species

From a pier-fishing guide (secondary, last modified January 2022) ([6]): seaperch and pileperch around the pilings and inshore; starry flounder in deeper water; leopard sharks, brown smoothhound sharks, bat rays and skates out at the end; plus white croaker (kingfish), jacksmelt, sanddabs, California halibut and striped bass at times.

Local rules and authority

  • License: CDFW says a fishing license is not required when recreationally fishing from a "public pier" in ocean or bay waters, as defined in Section 1.88 of Title 14, CCR. All other regulations, including minimum size, bag limits, report cards and seasons, still apply ([3]).
  • Gear: CDFW sets gear limits for public piers, including specific limits for piers in San Francisco and San Pablo bays. Check CDFW's page for the current rules before fishing ([3]).
  • Regulations and crab: see CDFW's San Francisco Bay District regulations and its Dungeness and rock crab regulations ([7]).
  • Eating your catch: check OEHHA's San Francisco Bay fish advisory before eating any catch ([8]).

Tide station

  • Rincon Point, Pier 22 1/2 — NOAA 9414317 (the metadata API names it "PIER 22 1/2, SAN FRANCISCO") ([9], [10]).
  • NOAA tide predictions (harmonic station; no live gauge). The station is a harmonic reference station (prediction type "R", no reference station) ([11]). Its physical gauge was established in 1974 and removed on 1981-04-16, so there are no live water-level readings ([12]). NOAA still serves predictions for it; the API returned high and low tide times for 2026-10-16 ([13]).
  • NOAA coordinates: 37.79, -122.387, at Pier 22 1/2 on the same central-bay Embarcadero waterfront as Pier 7 ([10]).
  • For comparison, NOAA 9414290, "San Francisco (Golden Gate)", is a harmonic station at 37.8063, -122.4659 near the Golden Gate ([14]). On 2026-10-16 its predicted highs and lows came 16 to 41 minutes earlier than those for 9414317 ([15]).

Note updates

  • 2026-10-16: Checked against the sources listed below and approved, replacing the earlier draft shown on this page. Statements we couldn't confirm from those sources were taken out, and status lines now carry the date we checked them. Changes from the draft:
    • Pier 7 details now follow the Port's wording; hours from fishing-guide sites were removed.
    • Municipal Pier and Pacifica Pier status now cite CDFW's pier list, dated 2026-10-16.
    • The species list was rebuilt from its source.
    • Removed an estimated distance.
