Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 16, 2026
FishDataPoint ("we", "us") runs fishdatapoint.com, a free fishing planner that shows solunar times, tides, weather and related information. This policy explains what information is involved when you use the site, who receives it, and your choices. It is written to meet the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) and to follow the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The short version
- No accounts, no ads, no cookies of our own, and no tracking across sites. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies, to count visits and measure how fast pages load. See "Analytics" below.
- We don't sell or share your personal information.
- The site is a set of static files. We run no server that receives your searches or location.
- To show live weather, alerts and water levels, your browser fetches them directly from public data services (Open-Meteo, the U.S. National Weather Service and others). Like any website you visit, those services see your IP address and what was requested, including the rounded location of a place you searched. Their own privacy policies apply; links are below.
- Saved places, settings and offline copies stay in your own browser.
How the site works
Our host, Cloudflare, delivers the site's pages and files. Everything else happens in your browser:
- solunar times, and sun and moon times, are calculated by our own code, in advance when we build the site or on your device for places you search
- calendar (.ics) and PDF downloads are created on your device
- live data comes straight from the data services listed below
We don't have a server that sees, stores or logs your searches, your location or the data you look at.
Information involved, and who receives it
| Category (CCPA terms) | What, exactly | Who receives it | Kept by us? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identifiers / internet activity | Your IP address, browser type and the page or file requested (never a searched point's coordinates) | Cloudflare, when it delivers our files. The data services your browser contacts (below), for those requests | No. We don't run logs. Cloudflare and each data service handle this under their own policies |
| Geolocation, rounded (only if you search a place or use "my location"). Because it's within about 100 m, the CPRA may count it as "precise geolocation", a sensitive category | Coordinates rounded to 3 decimals (about 100 m) | Open-Meteo only, directly from your browser, to fetch that point's weather and time zone. They stay after the "#" in the page address, which browsers never send to a server, so Cloudflare and we never receive them | No |
| Search text | What you type in the place search | Open-Meteo's place-search service, directly from your browser | No |
| Analytics (every page view) | The page address without the part after "#" (so never a searched point's coordinates), the referring page, your country (derived from your IP address), browser, operating system and device type, and page-load timings | Cloudflare Web Analytics, through a small script on each page | No. We see only totals in Cloudflare's dashboard, never individual visitors |
| On your device | Saved places, settings and offline copies (see below) | Nobody. They stay in your browser | Only in your browser, until you clear it |
| Email you send us | Your email address and message, if you write to contact@fishdatapoint.com | Us, through our email host (IONOS) | Only as long as needed to handle your message. Ask us to delete it at any time |
We do not collect names, accounts, payment details, contacts, photos or GPS tracks, and we don't combine information about you from different sources.
Your location
- "Use my location" is optional. Your browser asks permission first, and search works fine if you say no.
- If you allow it, your browser rounds your coordinates to 3 decimal places (about 100 m) before they are used for anything. Your browser may reuse a location it found in the last 10 minutes instead of asking your device again.
- The rounded coordinates are sent from your browser to Open-Meteo only, to get that point's weather and local time zone. In the page address they come after the "#", which browsers never send to a server, so neither Cloudflare nor we receive them.
- Requests to data services carry only our site's address ("fishdatapoint.com") as the referring page.
- Searched or located points are never listed in search engines, never saved in offline copies, and never put into downloads.
Data services your browser contacts
When you open a page, your browser requests live data directly from these public services. Each one receives your IP address, your browser type, our site's address as the referring page, and what was requested (for example a place's coordinates, an NWS alert zone or a lake gauge). They log and keep this under their own policies, not ours:
| Service | What your browser asks it for | Its policy |
|---|---|---|
| Open-Meteo | Weather, sea conditions, place search and time zones: for our reviewed places, and for places you search (their rounded coordinates, or the text you type) | Terms & Privacy. Its server logs may include IP addresses and coordinates and are deleted after 90 days |
| U.S. National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) | Official alerts for our reviewed places' NWS zones only. It never receives a location you searched or your own location | NWS privacy policy |
| U.S. Geological Survey | The Lake Tahoe water level | USGS privacy policies |
Tide predictions from NOAA CO-OPS are built into the site's files when we build it each day, so your browser doesn't contact NOAA. Places you search don't get tides or alerts, so they contact only Open-Meteo.
We have no contract with these services and don't control what they log. We chose them because they're public weather and science services that show no advertising. This is not a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under the CCPA: your browser contacts them at your direction, to show the information you asked for, and not for cross-context behavioral advertising.
What stays in your browser
We store a few things in your browser only. We can't see them, and they aren't sent to us.
| Stored item | What it contains | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
Saved places (local storage fdp:saved:v1) | The IDs of places you saved, e.g. san-diego | Tap the save star again, or clear this site's data in your browser |
Settings (local storage fdp:prefs:v1) | Units (imperial/metric) and 12/24-hour time | Clear this site's data |
Last place viewed (local storage fdp:last:v1) | The ID of the last reviewed place you opened, e.g. monterey, so the home page can offer "Continue to Monterey". Never a place you searched or your own location | Clear this site's data in your browser |
| Offline copy (Cache Storage, via our service worker) | Up to 10 reviewed-place pages you viewed most recently (forecast, tides, 7-day and calendar; the oldest is removed first), each with the time it was saved, plus the site's own files, so they open without a connection. A new version of the site replaces them once no tab is using the old one | Clear this site's data in your browser settings |
The "Continue to…" link and "Your saved places" are added by your browser from what it has stored; the home page we send is the same for everyone.
Searched or located points and downloads are never saved for offline use. We don't store data from the data services in your browser either, apart from your browser's normal short-term web cache. Opening an offline copy sends nothing to anyone. Saved places don't sync between devices.
Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many visits the site gets, which pages are used, and how fast they load. A small script from Cloudflare (static.cloudflareinsights.com) runs on each page and sends a short report back to our own domain.
- What it collects:
- the page address, without anything after the "#", so never a searched point's coordinates
- the referring page
- your country, which Cloudflare derives from your IP address
- your browser, operating system and device type (desktop, mobile or tablet)
- page-load and performance timings
- What it doesn't do: it uses no cookies or other storage in your browser, doesn't "fingerprint" you, doesn't track you across other websites, and isn't used for advertising.
- Why: to see aggregate visit counts and keep the site fast. We only see totals in Cloudflare's dashboard; we can't identify or follow individual visitors.
- Who processes it: Cloudflare, under its Web Analytics privacy commitments and privacy policy.
Cookies, advertising and Do Not Track
- Cookies: we don't set any cookies, and Web Analytics doesn't either. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary security cookies to protect the site from abuse.
- Advertising: none. No advertising or social-media scripts, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting.
- Third-party requests: our fonts and files are served from our own site. The only third-party requests your browser makes are to the data services listed above and Cloudflare's Web Analytics script.
- Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control: we don't track you across sites or over time, and we don't let third parties do so on our site. Our cookie-free Web Analytics counts visits in aggregate and doesn't follow you, so there is nothing for a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal to switch off. We treat every visitor as if those signals were on.
Our host
Cloudflare delivers the site's static files and protects it from abuse. Like any web host, it processes your IP address, browser type and the file requested; see Cloudflare's privacy policy. We use Cloudflare's cookie-free Web Analytics (see "Analytics" above) and keep its optional request logging switched off. Our email host for contact@fishdatapoint.com is IONOS.
We don't sell or share personal information
We don't sell personal information, and we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising (as the CCPA defines those terms). We have no ads or ad partners. We also don't disclose personal information to third parties for their direct marketing, so California's "Shine the Light" law (Civil Code §1798.83) has nothing to report. Cloudflare runs our Web Analytics for us, to count visits and measure performance; that is a service we use, not a sale or sharing, and the data isn't used for advertising.
Your California privacy rights
If you live in California, the CCPA gives you rights to:
- know what personal information we have about you
- delete it
- correct it
- opt out of its sale or sharing (we don't sell or share)
- limit the use of sensitive personal information. The rounded location goes only from your browser to Open-Meteo, to show the forecast you asked for.
- not be discriminated against for using these rights
In practice we hold nothing that identifies you except email you send us. To make a request, email contact@fishdatapoint.com. An authorized agent may make a request for you with your written permission. For information held by a data service listed above, contact that service using its policy link.
Do these laws apply to us? The CCPA applies to for-profit businesses above certain size thresholds (for example, annual revenue above about $26.6 million, or handling the personal information of 100,000 or more consumers or households). FishDataPoint is a small, free site that very likely doesn't meet them, but we follow these principles anyway, and you can use the rights above.
Children
The site is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has emailed us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
The site is served only over HTTPS, and our pages request data from the data services over HTTPS. Because we store almost nothing about you, there is little to protect. Information on your own device is protected by your browser and device settings.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top. This version took effect on October 16, 2026, when the site moved to static files and began using Cloudflare Web Analytics. We'll post a notice on the site before any future material change.
