About this spot
Spot type
Long fishing pier made from the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge, at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Florida State Parks says that when the new bridge was built, the old one became a fishing pier, with piers on the north and south sides of the bay mouth (Florida State Parks: Skyway Fishing Pier State Park). This page uses the north pier (Pinellas County side, reached from St. Petersburg) as its forecast point (OpenStreetMap: North Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier).
Public access
- Operator: Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, part of Florida State Parks. Address: 4905 34th St. South #5000, St. Petersburg (Florida State Parks).
- Hours: the park lists 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (Florida State Parks: Hours & Fees).
- Admission: the park charges an entrance fee per vehicle and per person; see the park's Hours & Fees page for current rates (Florida State Parks: Hours & Fees).
- On the pier: you can park close to your fishing spot, and the pier is lit at night. Restrooms are available, and food, drinks, bait and fishing supplies are sold. The park manager says supplies are sold on both the north and south piers (Florida State Parks; Florida State Parks: Experiences & Amenities; Florida State Parks: Manager's Message).
- Not allowed: pets are not allowed on the piers, and alcohol is prohibited. Vehicles over 12 tons, RVs, large trucks and trailers are not allowed on the pier (Florida State Parks: Experiences & Amenities; Florida State Parks: Manager's Message).
- Status, as of 2026-10-16:
- The park page shows a notice dated March 16, 2026: the south Skyway pier has no power, with limited service at the bait shop and limited lighting at night. No park notice says the north pier is closed (Florida State Parks).
- On March 19, 2026, the Governor's office said reconstruction and renewal projects on the north and south piers had begun. A new pier will be built on the Manatee County (south) side, and the Pinellas County (north) side will be improved and extended. Temporary fishing piers are being built during the work (Governor's office, 2026-03-19).
- Check the park page for current notices before you go (Florida State Parks).
Commonly caught species
- Florida State Parks lists snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper and pompano as common catches at the pier (Florida State Parks).
- FWC names Skyway Fishing Pier State Park (North) as a popular fishing location in Pinellas County. For Pinellas and Hillsborough inshore and coastal waters, it lists black drum, cobia, gray (mangrove) snapper, Gulf flounder, ladyfish, pompano, red drum, sheepshead, snook, Spanish mackerel, spotted seatrout and tarpon (FWC: Where to Saltwater Fish).
Local rules and authority
- Rules agency: the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) sets saltwater fishing rules. The state park says fishing in the park must follow regulations on size, number, method of capture and season (FWC: Saltwater Fishing; Florida State Parks: Experiences & Amenities).
- Licence: the park says a fishing licence may be required and points to FWC. FWC explains that a saltwater fishing pier licence, held by a pier's owner or operator, covers everyone fishing from that pier; the park does not say whether it holds one. Check with the park or FWC before you fish (Florida State Parks: Experiences & Amenities; FWC: Vessel and Pier Licenses).
- Skyway education course: FWC requires everyone who fishes at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park to complete FWC's online Skyway education course and to renew it every year. This includes people 65 and older who would normally be exempt from a licence. Under-16s don't need the course if an adult who has done it in the past year is with them (FWC: Skyway Fishing Pier State Park).
- Skyway gear rules: FWC sets gear rules just for this pier, both year-round and seasonal, to protect seabirds from tangling. Check FWC's Skyway page before you rig up (FWC: Skyway Fishing Pier State Park).
- Regulations: check FWC's current rules for size limits, bag limits and seasons before fishing (FWC: Saltwater Fishing).
- Fish consumption: see the Florida Department of Health's fish consumption advisories before eating your catch (Florida Department of Health: Eating Healthy Seafood).
Tide station
- NOAA 8726364, "Mullet Key Channel (Skyway)" (station metadata name: "MULLET KEY, TAMPA BAY"), at 27.615 N, 82.7267 W (NOAA station metadata; NOAA prediction stations list).
- Type: reference station. NOAA's tide-prediction station list gives it type "R", and NOAA publishes a harmonic-constituent table for it (NOAA prediction stations list; NOAA harmonic constituents).
